This Oscar de la Renta wedding gown made of silk faille and a grand cascading ruffle skirt has a beautiful sense of drama and structured elegance…such a perfect choice for Kathleen + Aaron’s classic and traditional church ceremony and country club reception in Nashville.  We love the matching sweetheart necklines on the bride’s and bridesmaids dresses.  And the plush bouquets in cream and coral look amazing.  Thanks for sharing Kathleen + Aaron and congrats!

The Ceremony
The ceremony, at Covenant Presbyterian Church, had breathtakingly vaulted ceilings accompanied by a magnificent organ. Hydrangeas on every few rows led the way to an alter filled with hydrangeas and florals of coral and cream. The ceremony was classic and elegant, focusing, primarily on the bride and groom and their dearest friends standing with them. A dear friend, of both bride and groom, Libby Black sang ‘How Great Thou Art’. It was such a sweet celebration of marriage!

The reception at Hillwood Country Club featured a romantic atmosphere with lush florals in coral and cream, antique crystal chandeliers, and a spacious dance floor. The couple’s favorite foods were served from rich southern cuisine to fresh Mexican fare accompanied by an open bar. I tried on probably thirty dresses. I went to three different places the first day and one the second day. The first day I found two that I loved…but one was SO fashion forward (very Carrie Bradshaw, Sex and the City) that I was a little worried I might look back at pictures and think it was trendy.  The other dress was gorgeous and SO classic…and I work in fashion, so I kind of wanted something that blended the two…fashion, but incredibly classic…and then I tried on this PERFECT Oscar de la Renta dress that was the perfect marriage of the two.

This boho-chic wedding in Garrison, New York is perfect parts playful and glamorous.  We love the rustic decor details like twig shaped initials for the cake topper, wood slice coasters and matching cake stand and our favorite: a totally unique pergola made entirely of branches and wood found on the property of the Garrison.  Don’t miss Lauren’s stunning Claire Pettibone, Chantilly wedding dress.  The capped sleeves and delicate lace back detailing are breathtaking.  Enjoy!

The Ceremony
The theme for our wedding was what I liked to call bohemian chic. I wanted it to have rustic details but also feel glamorous. Our ceremony was outside on the most gorgeous day, on top of a mountain, underneath a pergola made entirely of branches and wood found on the property of the Garrison. Mason jars full of fresh flowers were placed on the aisle chairs and guests who arrived via yellow school buses were greeted with a ukulele player performing. He played “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” when I walked down the aisle with my Dad. We were surrounded by our closest friends and family and they all threw colorful confetti and blew bubbles when we said “I Do”. This made for the perfect pictures!

The Reception
During cocktail hour, we had a steel drum band perform so that our guests could all be mentally transported to the tropics. Guests were able to sip cocktails and enjoy the most incredible sunset outside before dinner. The reception room was beyond my expectations. There were floor to ceiling windows so everyone could take in the amazing views and my “bohemian chic” details were showcased in everything from our centerpieces (my Dad cut up hundreds of pieces of wooden branches from our backyard to make coasters for our votive candles to sit on) to the burlap table runners and sprigs of lavender in each of the table settings. We had the best DJ and we danced the entire night.

“I Found My Wedding Dress in the Men’s Section at Sears”

Katie's wedding dress

Finding your perfect wedding dress is an emotional experience for every woman.  When your wedding planning coincides with a major life challenge, it can be even more so.  Recently, we received an email from a lovely PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com buyer named Katie.  We were so touched by her story we asked if we could share it here.  Read on to find out how she found her dream dress. In the men’s section at Sears.

Katie's Wedding Dress

I was 18 years old when my oldest sister Julie got married. I remember going with her to the bridal store to help her find a dress with my other sister, Nicki. There were tears when she found “the one.” From that day forward, I waited for my turn – the day I could try on white dresses for my sisters.

I felt like it took an eternity to find myself a husband, then one of life’s curveballs had me planning a wedding in a hurry. Shortly before I started treatment for Stage IV uveal melanoma, my then-fiancé Nick and I decided we just wanted to be married…now. I could get married in jeans and a sweater for all I cared. Meeting him at the end of the aisle was all that mattered.

Okay. I lied.

I increasingly compared the wedding I’d always dreamed of to the wedding we were having. He was all that mattered; that part was true. But there were some little things I still wanted to be just right, like wearing a gorgeous gown – and taking his breath away on our wedding day.

After accompanying me to New York City at the start of my clinical trial, Nick had to return to Denver one Sunday night to go back to work. I wouldn’t see him for 27 days. Upon returning to Denver, we would have two weeks and one day until the big day. We had six weeks to plan a wedding, so I delegated most of the planning to my incredible family and friends. When you have the bride card AND the cancer card, it’s amazing what you can get away with.

It would be a winter wedding – not what I ever pictured – and small, held in the wine room of a restaurant surrounded by a couple dozen immediate family members and a few close friends. It was much of what I wanted, just on a smaller scale (although not that much cheaper).

“Is it at all possible to find a wedding gown in six weeks?” a voice in my head kept wondering. I had always planned on wearing my mom’s wedding veil. And that would just look silly with jeans.

The night Nick left, I took a gander at dresses online. A bridesmaid seven times over, I had seen my share of brides go through the planning process. I had seen enough to know you can’t find, order, and alter a wedding dress in only six weeks. And even if I did have time, I had no idea what I wanted.

I googled “used wedding dresses.” The results included www.preownedweddingdresses.com. Hmmm. “Well that certainly sounds classier than used,” I thought to myself.

The site allows you to search by size, style, color, location – you name it. So I tested it out. I didn’t limit style or color (mostly because I had no idea of my preference), but I searched my size within a 25 mile radius of Manhattan.

Three dresses appeared. Two of them were an immediate “No.” One of them was beautiful. I messaged the bride, carefully, as my characters were limited. Katie's PreOwned Wedding Dress

My profile listed my location as Denver. Not realizing I was currently based in NYC, the owner of the dress wasn’t quite sure how I would “try it on.” She signed her name, Anna.

My mom’s name was Ann, and in the 18 years since she passed away, I’ve found her talking to me in ways like this – lately, more than ever.

I told this Anna my story.

Anna,

I wasn’t sure if it was possible to see dresses/try on before purchase. I’ve never used this site before. I got engaged on Thanksgiving and was diagnosed with Stage IV melanoma the same week. We are moving up our wedding to Feb 22 (not a lot of time!!!). I still want to have a nice dress, I just don’t have time to order/alter one. I’m living in NYC getting treatment for the month of January, and then will head back home to Denver. Your size/specs would probably fit me (I’m 5’4″ and have a torn ACL, so can’t wear heels – I’m a hot mess :)). Anyway, if that’s not a possibility, then I understand. I just wouldn’t want to buy a dress only to find it doesn’t fit. I did a search by zip code and your dress came up as close by. Let me know if that’s a possibility!

Christina, my best friend since first grade, was coming out to meet me in New York in two weeks. If I could time it right, it might be possible to meet Anna with Christina by my side. Sarah, my other best friend since kindergarten, was overlapping with Christina for one night. If I could really time it right, I’d have one on each side.

I was also reviewing other options. J.Crew, for example, makes beautiful wedding dresses that you can order in your size and get in a couple days. The company also has three stores in the country – one in New York – where you can actually go in and try on the dresses. Suddenly, getting treated for cancer in
the most populous city in the country had some advantages.

I called the store to set an appointment. “Miss, we don’t have any openings until the end of February.” That doesn’t really help me when my wedding date is February 22. I took a deep breath, and told my story again.

“How about January 24 at noon?”

Perfect. Christina was there that day.

“I’ll take it,” I said, thanking her profusely.

Meanwhile, Anna had confirmed a Sunday evening meeting for January 25, the day Christina and Sarah’s visits would overlap.

I liked so many J.Crew dresses listed online I even contemplated canceling on Anna. I wasn’t quite sure how we were going to get to her, as she lives outside the city. One additional concern: I had developed a rash on my chest and neck, a lovely side effect of the trial drug. Would a strapless dress even work?

If nothing else, I figured, it would be an adventure.

Christina and I set out on Saturday morning. J.Crew was great. They were very helpful, and it was so fun trying on all the gowns. One dress stood out. It was simple, elegant, and perfect for the venue. And it would go perfectly with my mother’s veil.

They took my measurements and recommended me for two sizes. Again, I found myself contemplating canceling on Anna, but some part of me wouldn’t allow it. I would wait until after seeing her dress before placing my order with J.Crew, I decided.

I still had no idea how we were going to get to Anna. She lives at least 30 minutes north of Manhattan. I told her it would be easiest for us to take the train, and she suggested the mall off the White Plains exit. I think meeting in a public place made us both more comfortable. The total fare was $51 roundtrip for all three of us, and taking the train was way safer than midwestern girls taking to the roads of Greater New York City.

We got to the mall early and wandered around for a bit. At 6:15 p.m., Anna texted us to meet her.

That’s how I ended up trying on my wedding dress in the Men’s Department at Sears.

We popped into a large, stand-alone dressing room. Christina and Sarah helped me get into the dress and as they zipped it up, I looked in the mirror, made a funny face, and started saying, “shit shit shit shit shit…”

Sarah asked, “You don’t like it?”

Christina, who knew I had really liked the J.Crew dress, replied, “I think she loves it.”

We deliberated for probably 15 minutes. I had withdrawn the $300 it was selling for out of my bank account in case I wanted to buy it. The dress was gorgeous. It was me. And it fit me like a glove. No alterations required.

But I wasn’t sure how it would go with the veil, and I still liked the simplicity of the J.Crew dress. Crap.

I decided to go for it. Even though I wasn’t 100% sold, I figured I could always re-sell it online. And if I did end up wearing it, I would have the added bonus of being able to tell people I bought my wedding dress in the Sears Men’s Department. I do love a good story.

Anna came back into the room. When I told her I wanted to buy it, she talked me down to $200. We had made the trip up, she pointed out. I attempted to argue then gave up easily seeing as she was haggling down.

Christina, Sarah, and I giggled like the schoolgirls we once were the entire way home. Sitting on the train reminded us of the eight years we rode the bus together in grade school – only I was towing a giant wedding dress folded up into a Container Store bag.

Still on the fence, I thought: if I buy the J.Crew dress, I could still have the day where I try on white dresses for my sisters. So I ordered the one dress in two sizes and had them shipped to Nicki’s house.

I got home to my honey in Denver, and the next day, we went to Nicki’s. After five long weeks, I was aching to get my arms around my nephews and niece. Nick and my brother-in-law entertained the kiddos, while Julie, Nicki, and I snuck upstairs to try on dresses.

First, the J.Crew dress. The larger size was too big. The smaller size fit, but just okay. It would have required more than just a hem, and Nicki didn’t think it was very flattering. With just two weeks until game day, I didn’t have time for that.

At that point, I had a feeling Anna’s dress was the one. So I grabbed the veil and my cowboy boots and snuck into the bathroom to try on the dress with the full effect. I was so relieved when I walked into the room and saw tears, surprisingly from Nicki, the less sappy sister. Julie was more concerned with getting us all wine to celebrate. In the end, it was no contest.

1_Katie-Wedding-Dress 2_Katie-Wedding-Dress

I am so grateful to have found my dress and loved the adventure in doing so – first trying it on with two lifelong girlfriends and then getting the stamp of approval from my sisters.

Katie's Wedding Dress

But the best moment in that dress was seeing the unforgettable look on Nick’s face the first time he saw me on our wedding day.

The Ceremony
Pictou Lodge in Nova Scotia was a natural choice for us to have our wedding. I grew up in Pictou County and am a beach girl at heart.  So I have always imagined getting married in a beautiful outdoor venue by the beach. Dan had been to the lodge before for their famous Sunday brunch while visiting my family on a summer vacation, and he is actually the one who first mentioned having the wedding here. It was perfect, at least half of our guests would be coming from out-of-town, whether it was Vancouver or Halifax, and Pictou Lodge could accommodate them all in fantastic cabins. They didn’t even have to leave the lodge all weekend if they didn’t want to, with lots of activities nearby and a restaurant on site. The most exciting part of the day was walking up the aisle and feeling all the love from the crowd, then Dan staring so deeply into my eyes during the entire ceremony before the perfect kiss!

The Reception
Our theme was an elegant but casual by-the-sea Nova Scotia bash. We had lots of Maritime touches, like a fiddle player for the ceremony, a lobster trap for gift cards, sand dollar chocolates decorated with the Nova Scotia tartan for favors, and seashells in the centerpieces. Our cake was a work of art exploding with edible flowers, seashells and sand. We even had my two nieces do a traditional Irish dance in between cocktail hour and dinner.  Pictou Lodge has such a rustic and natural charm on its own, we didn’t need much to dress it up besides lots of romantic candlelight from lace wrapped mason jars and twinkle lights on the ceiling. My favorite flower is the tiger lily, which my parents had hundreds of around their farmhouse growing up, so the colors we chose were based on this flower, along with other sunset colors – bright orange-coral, with touches of gold and champagne. My earrings, shoes, and sash were all gold-champagne and my bouquet was filled with tiger lily’s and huge peachy roses, accented with orange hypercicum berry, and the guys had the berries as their boutonnière.

Lori’s Dress Search
I started my dress search in love with Vera Wang’s, Diana. I had visions of walking down the aisle in that dress from day one. However, my mom wasn’t in love with the pouffy and deconstructed style, and since she had offered to help me pay for my dress, I wanted to get something she loved too! This formfitting but flowy gorgeous lace dress was something that made both of us happy. It was a bit more traditional and romantic, and I knew it would suit my seaside venue and rustic theme perfectly.

Why Lori Decided to Sell Her Wedding Dress
Although I loved my dress and the way it made me feel and look on my big day, I have more than enough pictures to help me remember it! I would love for another girl to feel the same way I did, at a better price so they can spend more on something else they want to include in their budget! I will be giving all the money back to my mom, who retired last year, as a thank-you for her generous gift of this dress to me.

Vera Wang, June | PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com

This sunset wedding at the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina is breathtaking! We love the woodsy green scape where Gretchen + Matthew held their ceremony. And the mix of mossy greens and silver and milk glass vases brimming with wild flowers are the perfect nod to this couple’s French Renaissance chateau venue nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Don’t miss Gretchen’s gorgeous figure flattering Vera Wang, June wedding dress.  The Chantilly lace illusion neckline, gathered tulle bodice and ruffle seam with eyelash organza flange skirt is a work of art.  Enjoy!

The Ceremony
Our ceremony was held at the Diana location on Biltmore Estate in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina at 6 pm on September 20, 2014.  Our ceremony was held outdoors.  The weather was perfect; it was sunny and in the 70s.  The ceremony location was on a hill that overlooked the Biltmore House, as well as the mountains.  The view was truly breathtaking.  My father and I arrived to the ceremony by horse and carriage.  Family and religion were incorporated into our ceremony…. also, a lot of loved ones.  We had eleven bridesmaids and twelve groomsmen; two friends (readers); our niece (flower girl); and nephew (ring bearer).  I’m from North Carolina, so it was important for me to have my wedding in my home state.  As we came down the aisle after the ceremony, our guests tossed lavender on us.

The Reception
Our reception was held at the Diana location on Biltmore Estate as well.  Our guests enjoyed a lovely cocktail hour on the hill overlooking the Biltmore House and mountains as the sun set.  The guests then moved inside a large tent to continue the evening’s festivities.  It was perfect to have everything in one location and easy for our out-of-town guests.  We had about 140 guests join us for our wedding.  At our reception, we sat all of the immediate family at a giant feasting table (there were about 20 of us).  The table was overwhelmed with flowers.  It was truly a sight to behold.  We had a DJ for dancing.  We also had a photo booth for our guests with a vintage curtain backdrop (from BHLDN).  My sister went to antique stores and got very formal props for the photo booth, including fancy jewelry, wine goblets, a cane, hats, a fur shawl, etc.  Our guests had a blast!  My husband and I had also received dancing lessons before the wedding, so our first dance together was choreographed to our song.  We chose “The Offering” by The Avett Brothers.  Our wedding favors were full-size tubes of hand-made Moravian cookies.  They are made in my hometown and are delicious!

Gretchen’s Dress Search
I spent about one and half days trying on dresses.  I probably tried on about 15 dresses total, in different styles. I fell in love with my dress before I ever tried it on.  I had seen a picture of this particular dress and just had a feeling that it was “my dress.”  When I actually tried it on, I knew it was perfect!  I was looking for a mermaid style dress; I also liked lace.  This dress was the perfect “marriage” between the two.  This dress truly had a uniqueness about it, which matched my personality.  It was feminine, dramatic, and classy.  I felt stunning in the dress!

Vera Wang, Katherine | PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com

This country club wedding on Long Island was a dream of today’s featured bride ever since the day Aimee attended her first party at the Carlyle on the Green as a teenager.  Beautifully landscaped greenery, a manor house venue with old-world charm and a gorgeous Vera Wang, Katherine wedding gown. Sounds fabulous! We are in love with the romance and grandeur of this dress…layers and layers of tulle and organza, asymmetrical gatherings of bustled crinoline and a skirt complete with hand-rolled floral detail and horsehair trim.  Perfect!

The Ceremony
Our wedding took place on September 4, 2014 at Carlyle on the Green, a beautiful country club situated on Bethpage State Park on Long Island, New York. Though I was just a teen the first time I attended a party at this venue, I vividly recalled being captivated not only by the luscious landscape, but also by the timeless elegance of the English Manor in which the reception took place. The entire property had an old-world charm that left me dreaming of having my own wedding there someday. With much gratitude, that vision ultimately became a reality. The first decision my fiancé and I agreed upon after getting engaged was to have a late summer wedding. Aside from it being our favorite season, it forged us the opportunity to bring another dream to fruition: an outdoor ceremony. Though we did have a back-up plan in case of rain and winds, we prayed for months that our wedding day would see bright and sunny weather, which was precisely what we were blessed with. But on that night, it was not just the weather that created the ambiance, but also the beautiful floral arrangements, along with the candles and fuchsia lighting that illuminated the gazebo under which we got married. With our favorite violin covers playing as our family and friends walked down the aisle, and our talented cantor singing traditional wedding songs, we knew this was a moment we would cherish forever. For months after our wedding, our guests reminded us it was one of the most beautiful ceremonies they had ever attended.

The Reception
With the few spare moments we had between our ceremony and reception, my hair stylist quickly took my hairstyle and transformed it into a chic and slicked-back chignon. I changed out of my five-inch stilettos, into a pair of bridal sneaker wedges, and now I was truly ready to party! My husband and I grabbed a quick bite to eat, and downed some Gatorade to quench our thirst, and immediately joined our guests, who flew in from around the world to join us on this special occasion. It meant so much that all our guests were on the dance floor the whole night, which was partially thanks to the talented DJ, violinist and percussionist. But just as we were warned, the party flew by in the blink of an eye and, before we knew it, we were cutting our cake and wishing our guests farewell. Even after the music shut down, our closest friends and family gathered around us, hoping to celebrate for just a bit longer. Our brother-in-law even played piano for us to continue dancing long after the band had left. It was truly unforgettable!

Aimee’s Dress Search
My first wedding gown appointment was at a local salon in my hometown that carried a variety of designers. Though I tried on close to ten different gowns, all of which were beautiful and flattering, I left with an unsettling feeling that none of them had that “wow” factor I was really looking for. I tried another three other salons that same week, but unfortunately each visit became more and more disappointing. Feeling nothing more than sheer exhaustion and despair, I made one last appointment for a small bridal boutique in NYC and hoped for the best. That morning I decided it might be helpful to bring some images of gowns I liked.  I searched online with the key words I was interested in: white, horsehair, ball gown. There was one image that appeared in the results which made me gasp: the Vera Wang, Katherine gown. The only caveat was that it was in red. About an hour or two later at the bridal salon, I began to browse through the racks when I suddenly paused and my jaw dropped. It was that very same gown I hoped to magically find in white, hanging right before my eyes! I knew right then and there that my search had come to an end.

The Ceremony
We were married on October 4, 2014 in Malibu, California. The wedding was bohemian-glam. We rented a property in the vineyard district of Malibu for the weekend and had a three-day wedding with just our closest friends and family. My personal style is very bohemian-mod, but once I found this princess ball gown, I knew it would take a lot of creativity to fuse the two ideas. And I did just that by introducing bridesmaids dresses designed by For Love and Lemons, by accessorizing with Samantha Wills, and by spontaneously deciding to add flash tattoos to the bridal party (champagne during hair and makeup may have influenced that last addition, but it was a hit!). Our ceremony took place at sunset in the garden with an overview of the Malibu canyons. My mom was the officiant, our family and friends said a blessing during our vows, and when we kissed I-do confetti poppers exploded and fuchsia confetti filled the sky.

The Reception
After cocktail hour, guests ordered Mexican food from the famous Border Grill Food Truck. The tables were set with dip dyed the table runners and hand painted bamboo flatware that my bridal party and I personally crafted. The menus were designed by my husband and the flowing and whimsical center pieces were done by Holly Flora- a flower-genius! The entire day was blissful, from our morning hike together to shake the day’s nerves off to the end of the night when we were striking silly poses at the flipbooth station. But I have to say, hands down, my favorite memory of the day was our first dance. Our first dance was to “Fools Rush In” by Elvis Presley, played off a record player with the genuine scratches and hum you can only get from a real-record-player. Half way through the song a fuse blew and the sound went off. Without a skipping a beat- our guests began singing the song to us. Even though it was a complete accident, most the guests assumed it was planned, and it was, without a doubt, the most romantic moment of my life so far.

Marly’s Dress Search
I tried on so many dresses. I drove hundreds of miles to dress shops to see different designers. I searched the Internet and went wild at designer trunk sales. I’m a stylist- so this dress had to be a memory maker without breaking the bank. Funny enough, this was the third dress I ever tried on. As the sales woman at Vera Wang was zipping up my dress- I knew- this was the dress. It’s a funny thing when you find your dress, it’s like meeting your soul mate. Your heart skips a beat, you feel incredible, you can see yourself walking down the isle- and you can’t get it out of your head! Even when it’s way out of your budget! So three months after finding and leaving my dress behind, I returned to Vera Wang. I returned confident that I could afford this dress because websites like PreownedWeddingDresses.com exist. I would have bought this dress if it had been available on your website. I am proud to be selling this dress, supporting sustainability through recycled fashion and supporting affordable fashion for other brides like me out there.

Why Marly Decided to Sell Her Wedding Dress
I spent many nights pouring over the PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com website and other sites looking for this dress before biting the bullet and buying it at Vera Wang. I know that another bride out there is probably in the same dilemma I was, and I know this dress will find her.

I am selling this dress because I believe in sustainability through fashion and consumer choices. This is just another way to contribute to this cause. I am selling this dress so that another bride can afford her dream dress. I am selling this dress because I believe in a life of simplicity and fewer material items – besides, where would I store such a gloriously large piece?!! And lastly, because I trust that my daughters will posses a taste, style, and voice of their own.
