Cake Toppers
Please excuse the lateness of this post! Jarrod leaves for 10 days in Taiwan tomorrow (strange spring break), so I spent a nice evening with him. And to think that I used to spend months without him for the last four years! It seems unbearable to be without him, but I’ve always found that things are okay once he’s gone, and time will just fly to when he returns! Seriously though–we have four weekends together, then I move back to Indiana, chill out (or freak out?) during the month of May, go to his graduation, and then get married. Yikes!

Anyway. I’m a DIY kind of girl, if you haven’t figured that out already. So when I saw these cake toppers in one of the Martha Stewart Weddings I was flipping through early on in the engagement, I just knew that I had to make them. Actually, to be honest with you, I really just wanted them because I loved them, but when I saw the $100 price tag for a customized set, and then the $15 price tag for a DIY set, I was convinced. I placed my order, received my five custom colors, two figurines, and brushes, and added the painting to my to-do list for May.
I was bored this week, so I figured, “What better time to start painting than the present?” Hey–it’s a good thing I did, too. I mean, everything went swell. Until Jarrod saw his figurine and told me that he wanted to wear pants and not a dress. Even that wasn’t so bad. Then I mixed my one pot of white into grey for Jarrod’s suit. (I thought I had two pots of white. Turns out the second pot was actually varnish, ha ha.)
This Goosegrease character really has great customer service though. I e-mailed her my dilemma and she’s sending me a male figure and a pot of white for no charge! Just for giggles, I thought I’d show you Jarrod’s female figure painted to look like him (below).

Not exactly the same as what I would have gotten for $100, but not bad, and anyway, it was a practice run. The line could be a little bit lighter and thinner; ironically, thin lines are what I always struggled with in my college art classes. (This is why I did sharpie art for my final project!) I also need to be more careful about not letting the hands disappear, since the “skin” is actually pure wood. And finally, his hair comes all the way down to his collar, which I need to fix next time around.
But all in all, not a bad attempt! I’m very glad that I did the slightly-unintentional practice run, because now I know how much time it will take and I know how to correct errors that I might have made with days to spare before the actual wedding!
Anyway, time to get to bed. I’m kind of under the weather, and besides–morning will be here before I know it.
